Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to a farm operation so that the growers and consumers are providing mutual support and sharing the risks and benefits of food production. Typically, members or "share-holders" of the farm or garden pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm operation and farmer's salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm's bounty throughout the growing season, as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production. Members also share in the risks of farming, including poor harvests due to unfavorable weather or pests. By direct sales to community members, who have provided the farmer with working capital in advance, growers receive better prices for their crops, gain some financial security, and are relieved of much of the burden of marketing.
CSAs come in all shapes and sizes: some provide vegetables and fruits, some include beef, pork, poultry and eggs. The number of shareholders for any particular farm may range from as few as 25 to as many as 1000 households.
Many CSAs use biodynamic, organic, and/or sustainable farming practices, which benefit the consumers, the farmer, the land, and the environment. By supporting these farms, you are eating healthier food, encouraging more of this style of farming, helping the community at large, and improving our environment.
Many CSAs sell to individual consumers outside of the CSA model at places such as Farmer's Markets. Some Farmer's Markets require all participants to sell only organic food, and some do not. You can find many of the CSAs listed below at the Franklin Farmer's Market, as well as other organic products. The Nashville Farmer's Market does not require its participants to sell only organic products.
The list below contains Nashville and surrounding area farms that operate using the CSA model, or other similar methods that enable a direct relationship between the farm and its customers.
